February is American Heart Month

Join ABCO in Going Red and Supporting the American Heart Association

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease.

Each February, American Heart Month aims to raise awareness about heart health and urge Americans to lower their risk for developing heart disease. The American Heart Association’s signature women’s initiative, Go Red for Women, is designed specifically to increase women’s heart health awareness. In the past, heart disease and heart attack have been predominantly associated with men. Only 55 percent of women realize heart disease is their No. 1 killer.

Ways to Help:

1. Make a donation in any amount to the American Heart Assocation's Go Red for Women Initiative at any ABCO FCU branch. Those who make a donation of $5 or more will receive the official GO RED Dress lapel pin that you can wear all month long to raise awareness around heart disease or honor a loved one. The AHA uses all revenues from local and National Go Red For Women activities to support awareness, research, education and community programs to benefit women. Wear red on National Wear Red Day - February 1st.

2. Make a donation to the American Heart Assocation Online

Donations to the American Heart Association help fund innovative research, advocacy, and patient support until no more loved ones are lost to heart disease and stroke.

3. Be Aware Of Heart Attack Warning Signs
Don’t wait to get help if you experience any of these heart attack warning signs. Some heart attacks are sudden and intense. But most start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Pay attention to your body and call 911 if you experience:

  • Chest discomfort.
Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes – or it may go away and then return. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
  • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body.
Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  • Shortness of breath.
This can occur with or without chest discomfort.
  • Other signs.
Other possible signs include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
