The issue involves interchange fees merchants pay financial institutions, including ABCO Federal Credit Union, when processing debit card transactions. For example, when you make a purchase with your debit card, the merchant receives an interchange fee from the merchant. Interchange reflects a merchant's share of the costs of this convenient system and compensates ABCO for taking all the risk. Changes to the current interchange system could force some financial institutions, including ABCO, to adjust their debit card programs to compensate for these changes. The current interchange system allows ABCO to provide competitive and member-friendly debit card services to its members.
